Southern Salt Food Company (Food Truck) Review

Little Rock is hosting Food Truck Fridays at the corner of Capitol and Main. Unfortunately it began in April and only runs a couple of more weeks from 11:00-1:30. June 13th is the last chance to experience this mid-day fun.

There aren't many participating trucks, and they rotate from week to week. Today's offerings were two barbecue trucks (one mainstream, and one of the Asian variety), an Italian Ice cart, and a catfish/poboy truck.

My friends and I were delightfully pleased with Southern Salt Food Company's truck. It's a trailer rather than a truck, and it's quite charming. I didn't actually take a picture of the trailer today because I was too busy eating my lemon Italian ice as I stood in line for my Asian BBQ "cheese steak" sandwich. On site, the owners had taken the time to merchandise and stage the area surrounding their trailer with vintage coolers to hold cold drinks. The folksy props on the ground under the windows added to the ambiance.

The people running the food truck were genial and seemed to be enjoying themselves as well as their customers. That always enhances any experience.

But what about the food, you ask.

It was scrumptious. My Southern Salt "Cheese Steak" was hearty, but not heavy. It had a slight earthy flavor juxtaposition nicely with a savory sweetness. I wasn't sure if I could eat the entire sandwich, but I did. I was satisfied but not overly full. My friend Vicki ate the Loaded Bratwurst, and she was equally satisfied. She enjoyed the un-encased brat surrounded by the BBQ.

I am hoping to make it back to the last two Food Truck Fridays to see what other pickings there are to be had. The only negatives about today would be the deafening roar emitted by the generators of two of the trucks (not SSFC), as well as the fumes. The location is also problematic. While Capital and Main is centrally located, the corner isn't large enough to host many trucks. Then again, that would mean more generator noise and pollution.

Hopefully this trend will catch on. While Little Rock is a small city, I think it can accommodate a hearty food truck business. Even after FTF ends,  I hope to patron Southern Salt Food Company truck again in the future. Click HERE to go to their Facebook page.

Unintentional Blogger

Honestly, I don't know what is wrong with me. I set out to be quite intentional about blogging, even if it was just for me, I had hopes of being more purposeful, but I have cycles of discipline and blah-dom. Maybe this is an upswing. I'm feeling the itch to communicate to the masses, or to the five people I hope are still interested in my musings.

I went back to NY last month. It. was. fabulous. Gosh, I like that city. It was especially fun trip time because I got to spend more time with my friend Jerri. She was so busy in October we didn't get to hang out as much as we liked. This time was different. We had lots of good conversation and a bounty of laughter. Whether staying up to 2 a.m. to recover dining room chairs, or bonding with another table over dinner, I had a wonderful time with Jerri.

And the laughter. In one situation we were on our way home after a night in the city, and we were laughing so hard, we half expected to be expelled from the train.

It was a good trip. Here are a few shots.

Five Things to Catch Up 2014

It has been almost five months since my last post. Obviously I don't deserve to call myself a blogger. Not that it matters. The likelihood that anyone reads this is slim. If you are here, thanks, and welcome. I thought I'd do a quick bullet point to recap the beginning of 2014.

  1. Our student ministry hosted DNow in January. We had over 300 students, and I loved hanging out with the junior and senior girls from Park Hill and Baring Cross.

  2. I had the opportunity to go on my second mission trip to work with the Landing Church in the Seattle area. We spent time praying over the community and helping the church set-up and break-down the portable church service.

  3. March has been a super month too. Tiffany and I had a fun afternoon painting canvases. The same evening my Caitie Bug came over for a TaterBug weekend. A week later, my OBU friend, Kristi drove up for a spontaneous Girls' Day.

  4. Caitie and I had another TaterBug Day to celebrate her going away to the USAF boot camp. Okay, it wasn't a celebration of her leaving. In fact, I feel a little like curling into a ball and sucking my thumb about losing her for four and a half months. She will come back as a USAF reservist and a trained dental assistant. We celebrated her 19th birthday and the beginning of her grown-up life. 

  5.  In just over a week, I leave for NY. I really enjoyed my time in the city last fall. I'm looking forward to spending time with my beautiful friend Jerri.  Here are a couple of shots from my first visit in Ocotober.

10 Ways to Have a Better Vacation Than Greg

My brother-in-law Greg was on vacation last week. Unfortunately it ended with pancreatitis and a seriously messed up gall bladder. It ended with a couple of trips to the hospital and surgery.

It was not a fun week, so I decided to help him out by suggesting better ways he could have spent his time. So here are 10 ways to have a better vacation than Greg.

10.  Get a full body wax followed by an alcohol rub.

  9.  French braid a porcupine.

  8.  Take a nap on a mound of fire ants.

  7.  Tie a live chicken around your neck all week.

  6.  Swim with sharks- with a live chicken around your neck.

  5.  Mistake Super Glue for eye drops.

Jar o' Pumpkins

I have so much to write about. My planner has been quite full, but that isn't a complaint. I spent the last few years with an anemic calendar, so it's nice to be busy. 

One of the things I've been doing is working at a pumpkin patch on the weekends. I decided to bring home a bunch of pumpkins, including a collection of minis. I put the tiny pumpkins in a large, old jar and placed it on my table. I think it's a darling centerpiece, and one that's easily moved when needed.

Squeezing September & Overflowing October

Life has been good. 

Scratch that. God has been good, and life has been busy. 

The last few weeks have been a tornado of activity. The next few are slated to be the same, and I like it!

Here's some of what has been going on...

 I went on a mission trip to Seattle to work with The Landing Church. Our group did landscaping and clean up at a local elementary school. We also fed the faculty and staff a yummy lunch from Q'doba.

Andy and Trang Brown moved from Arkansas to the Seattle area earlier this year to start The Landing Church. They are doing a fabulous job of getting to know the people in their area, and showing them that God's love is all about relationship.

I spent the day helping in a classroom. That is where I met THE MOST AMAZING kindergarten teacher EVAH! Mrs. Menon has the enthusiasm of a brand new teacher - even after more than a decade in the classroom. She struck a beautiful harmony between discipline and fun, and her communication skills were a joy to witness. Mrs. Menon used words that were above her students, but then she would follow up by repeating her instructions with a synonym of the hard word. Why wait to expand a child's vocabulary? 

Their brains are sponges, they can take it.

I enjoyed the art instillation that decorated downtown.

The flowers at Pike's Place Market overwhelmed my happy senses.

Another project we accomplished was to serve the homeless population downtown. We packed duffle bags with socks, blankets, hygiene products, and a Bible. My group met Mike and Trish. We bought their lunch, and talked with one another. I sat next to Trish in the dirty parking lot between a car and a concrete wall and let her tell me her story.We prayed for them before we left. I'm still praying for them.

When I returned from Seattle I got to do a senior photo shoot with this BEAUTIFUL young lady.

Anna was is such a doll. We had a lot of fun at this horse ranch.

She even makes an old shed look good.

What a beauty.

I also started working at a pumpkin patch on the weekends. The Hicks family are a blast. They make me laugh. 

I am overwhelmed with God's provision and opportunities. I am blessed.

Next I'm off to NYC to see my crazy friend Jerri. I'll be there in less than 48 hours and I'm shaking with excitement. She may find me living in her basement refusing to come home. If I do make it back, I have a couple of more photo shoots lined up and a few more activities on the calendar.
